Dear Santa, I want one of these:

CaseyP| November 22, 2006 10:30 am

I just finished drying my keyboard after salivating all over it whilst viewing this beautiful piece of machinery.  I have been secretly lusting after a tablet PC for quite some time.  I’ve always  wanted a slate though, and there have been blessed few updates to that form factor for quite some time.  This baby rawks with U2500 procs, 4GB max RAM, 100GB SATA HDD, WiFi, gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth, Firewire, PCMCIA slot, AND Apple’s shock sensing tech for the hard drive!  It coulda woulda shoulda had a ATI or Nvidia mobile graphics proc…but hey, we’re being nitpicky, I’m not gonna fire of City of Heroes or Star Wars Galaxies on this thing.

So…just in case you’re wondering what to buy me for Christmas this year, AND you have $2,429 in your Christmas budget…this is EXACTLY what I’m looking for.

(Author’s Note:  Please excuse my superfluous use of the fanboy word, "rawk."  I just can’t help myself.)

On schools, education, and profit.

CaseyP| November 21, 2006 1:55 pm

The lovely wife and I have recently been mulling over what school to put our 3 yr old daughter in, when it’s time to go to kindergarten.  I know…right?  We plan early.  We started putting together a wish list and comparing the pros and cons of our local public school, a nearby town’s public school, and a private Christian school in town when I was hit by a stunning revelation, which I’m sure I will bring up if I ever run for public office.  I’ll get to it in a second, first I’d like to outline some pros and cons.

Pros of Public School:

  • Theoretically decent education
  • Access to better and more classes (at least in our town)
  • Real certified teachers (again…our private school is not a "top tier" private school)
  • Extra curricular activites galore!

Cons:

  • Bad influences
  • Relatively unconcerned teachers
  • Easy for underperforming kids to slip through the cracks
  • School bombings (hey, it happens)

Pros of Christian School:

  • Lower student/teacher ratio
  • Smaller sports teams and less competitive environment means all kids get to play
  • Teachers relatively more concerned with students, and are stricter on unwanted behavior

Cons:

  • Few or no real certified teachers
  • Teens who are growing in their walk with God often have no one to witness to (that’s more important than it seems)
  • Lack of many or most advanced classes.
  • Teachers of higher level classes seem lost in the subject matter, as few have ever even attended college

In our small town, going to private school for a superior education is not factor.  What it boils down to is protecting your kids as best as you can from drugs and other unwanted influences in public schools.  Ideally, Christian parents across America would be good citizens and get involved with the PTA/PTO and make changes that reflect our beliefs in the school system.  We would encourage teachers that they’re doing a good job, and that they’re making a difference.  We would teach our children to stand up for what is right in the face of peer pressure.  But what is happening is that many Christian parents are taking their children to Christian schools so they don’t have to "deal with it."  I call it the City on a Hill Syndrome.  Of course public schools are bad and getting worse…it’s because the light and salt have left and gone somewhere else.

I feel very strongly that I should be involved…but at the same time, all of my daughter’s friends from church will pretty much be going to the Christian school in town.  She’ll experience nearly a spiritual desert upon entering the public school system.  If she were older, perhaps she could witness to people and win souls to Christ and redeem her on group of friends.  But we’re talking about kindergarten here.  The good influences are gone.  We are forced to choose between two unattractive options:  1. Go to public school where she will have no friends raised in CHristian homes; or 2. Go to the Christian School and accept a sub-par education.

I believe the answer lies in the total privatisation of all schools.  I have been the only conservative I know for quite some time who has been opposed to school vouchers.  I don’t believe in abandoning our public schools.  But what if there were no public schools?  What if schools were forced to compete for our voucher money?  All schools would be equal.  If I valued a good Christian atmosphere and daily Bible studies more than a top-notch education, I would be more than welcome to send my child to the local Christian school.  If I was looking for both, or perhaps just a good education, I could compare our current public schools offerings with other schools in the area.  Public schools have little to no competition.  They have nothing driving them to excel, to be better than they were last year.  No…worse, they increasingly are concerned with nothing more than maintaining the status quo, with making sure no one gets killed, and at least most kids graduate.  What if their money was really at stake?  What if profitability mattered to schools?  They’d need to compete for the voucher money that’s out there in order to increase profits.  Would they cut corners?  Maybe, but parents are smart…it wouldn’t take long for that to catch up and the school to start losing money to competitors.  I think that this drastic overhaul is by far the BEST solution for grade school education in this country.  I welcome your thoughts.

. . . aaaand we have a house!

CaseyP| November 15, 2006 2:58 pm
That’s right…tell me it’s not a miracle.  On Dec 15, we will take possession of this ugly thing pictured below.  Here’s the real miracle…we’re getting it for about 35% or so of what houses of the same size are selling for in the neighborhood.  Sure, it needs a lot of work, but it’s mostly cosmetic issues that can be fixed inexpensively with some elbow grease.  You can check out the House Pics album on the right for lots of pictures of the house and its many issues.  Any home repair tips are greatly appreciated!

Lies….all lies.

Recently this picture below of my lovely and intelligent wife appeared on the website of one Holly Bannister.
The caption says that my lovely and intelligent wife was being "silly" by engaging photographic tomfoolery.  I would like to present evidence to the contrary.
In the following picture, we can clearly see that my lovely and intelligent wife was, in fact, taking a picture of Holly.  It is clear that Holly’s claims are salacious and deceitful…intended only to tarnish my lovely and intelligent wife’s good name.  Take that Miss Banister.  Take that.
(Note: I believe these pictures are showing up backwards…the one with the caption is taking by Holly, of my lovely and intelligent wife.)

On Santorum’s Concession

CaseyP| 10:46 am
Apparently Rick Santorum has called me to concede.  I hate it for ol’ Ricky, but I’m glad that someone finally realizes I have what it takes to make the right decisions in this country.  It’s ashame that I couldn’t have served a nicer and warmer state than Pennsylvania…but these are the sacrifices one must make for his country.  I have prepared an agenda for my first 100 hours in office of changes I will presenting and subsequently railroading through congress.  Many people have asked if I am concerned that the new Dhimmi-crat majority will pose a threat to some of my plans.  I anticipate no problems, as the dhimmis currently have no plans of their own, and seem to be relatively weak-willed and easily influenced.  Should my charm and doggedness fail to persuade them, I have a contingency of has-been celebrities who fancy themselves politcal pundits waiting in large room to distract and woo them whilst I sweep through the congressional process relatively unopposed.
Here are major changes coming soon:
  1. The wall between us and Mexico will be extended to cover the entire border.  Guard dogs and robots will be used to "neutralize" any fence-jumpers.
  2. Any illegal immigrants face immediate deportation to Mexico, unless they agree to change their name to Paco and work only in approved Tex-Mex restaurants.
  3. English as the official language of the United States of America.
  4. Iraq: America’s 51st state.  This serves 2 purposes: #1.  Prove that GW never went to Iraq for the oil…but he should have.  #2.  Cheap oil.
  5. CIA technology director renamed "Q."
  6. No smoking in all public buildings.
  7. Iran and North Korea threat nutralized by throwing water balloons and shouting "Booga booga booga!"
  8. German candy "Rittersport" will be sold in all Wal-Marts.

That should do it for the first 100 hours.  Again, I am grateful to have your vote, Pennsylvanians…you shall always be my top priority, as soon as I find where you are on the map.

On College and Careers

CaseyP| November 13, 2006 8:25 pm
So, tonight began the new Young Adults class at our church.  Of course, this would more commonly be referred to as a College and Career’s class…but only one of us is in college, and you can’t just call it "Careers". . . because that wouldn’t make much sense, would it?  I think it went relatively well.  We had 5 people.
I’ve noticed a disturbing trend in our church, that I believe is indicative of the body of Christ as a whole…we 20-somethings are the forgotten generation.  I’ve also noticed what I believe is probably a nation-wide macrotrend of 20-somethings being the largest group of church visitors.  I think it’s probably really hard to come out of the world and to give up all your friends and go from partying every night to being a virtual recluse who pokes their head out on Sundays and Wednesdays.  It’s quite rare, in my view, to find a ministry focusing on this age group.  I’m so excited for the honor of starting this one at our church.  It’s obvious that my generation is seeking something…or we wouldn’t be such prolific church visitors…maybe we can start showing them what they’re looking for.  Discuss:
